VICTORIA – On behalf of the Honourable John Les, Minister of Small Business and Economic Development and the minister responsible for sport, MLAs in four communities announced today that Kimberley-Cranbrook, Kelowna, Terrace and the Township of Langley have been chosen to host the 2008 and 2010 B.C. Winter and B.C. Summer Games.
“These communities have shown dedication to the development of amateur sport through their initiative to bid on the B.C. Games,” said Les. “I had the privilege of being involved in the 1993 B.C. Summer Games as the mayor of Chilliwack. The community pride and financial legacies that were generated during those B.C. Games are still present today.”
The 2008 B.C. Winter Games will be hosted by the communities of Kimberley and Cranbrook with the 2008 B.C. Summer Games taking place in Kelowna. The 2010 B.C. Winter Games will take place in Terrace and the Township of Langley will host the 2010 B.C. Summer Games.
“The B.C. Games Society received high quality bids from these communities as well as many others,” said Wendy Ladner-Beaudry, co-chair of the B.C. Games Society. “We know that each community chosen will provide a tremendous celebration of sport and community spirit for our young athletes.”
“As British Columbians prepare for the Vancouver 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, B.C. Games host communities will be working to provide opportunities to the next generation of Olympians and Paralympians,” said Les.
Thousands of British Columbia’s developing athletes, with an average age of 14-15 years, compete at the B.C. Games. Held since 1978, the B.C. Games are the largest multi-sport events in B.C. and feature competitions in 22 winter sports and 25 summer sports including badminton, skiing, lacrosse, and sailing.
